Are The Gods Laughing At Us?

Yesterday, I read a good post on The Wild Hunt.  It was entitled, “Should We Let the Gods Be Mocked.”  I thought the article good, but it sparked a thought in me that led in a slightly different direction.

Are the gods laughing at us?

Now, before you get your monotheistic panties in a twist, let me say that what I mean by “gods” is not meant as a polytheistic stance, but rather describing our differing views of who or what God is.  For the Christian one God, for the Muslim another, and so on.

Who do we think we are?  I mean seriously, the creator of the Universe, the one who created I have no idea how many galaxies, solar systems, planets, that God, is going to be upset because someone said something negative about a particular religion?  They didn’t get their theology perfect.  That doesn’t even sound God like to me.  That sounds like a petty human so insecure in their self worth that any slight sets them off.

One of the things I like about being a Pagan, and I know this is a generality, is that Pagans seem to make room for differing beliefs.  Yes, I know there are jerk wad Pagans out there who will get all upset if I don’t worship Zarathustra as the true God, but by and large, we make room.

What would the world be like is everyone made room for the others religion.  I mean, we don’t make disparaging remarks about their religion.  We don’t persecute them for their religion.  We don’t treat them differently because of their religion.  We also don’t get al upset if some idiot says our God isn’t the biggest meanest God on the block.  We just move on.

I have no idea how many people have been killed over the course of history over this one issue.  At the Druid Gathering I attended, John Michael Greer the Archdruid of the ADF, made a statement that went something like this.  We have given monotheistic theology a try for the past two and a half thousand years, and it hasn’t worked out that well.

To me, that statement says not so much that we should all believe in many gods, but that we need to make room for others beliefs.  If I believe in Yahweh, and you believe in Allah, lets just move along without wanting to kill the other.

I take it back, I don’t think the gods are laughing at us.  I think they are crying for our stupidity.  The Infinite knows that we can’t figure it out.  All that we can do is do the best we can.  The Creator of all things knows this and make room.
